Dana and Ben’s Wedding at The Highlands Country Club

Hurricane Schmurricane!

Another second shooter’s perspective with lead photographer Ryan Brenizer.   Every wedding that I’ve shot with Ryan has had some level of drama (mostly created by Ryan himself with his crazy lighting techniques); but a looming hurricane?  Dana and Ben’s wedding happened to be on the day “Super Storm” Sandy was supposed to hit the Tri-State area (but it turned out that the brunt of Sandy’s impact occurred on the evening of the day after).  Even the threat of bridge and road closures didn’t deter guests (and vendors) from making the trip to show their unrelenting support for this beautiful young couple.

Congratulations!

Charlene and Vincent’s Wedding at Tappan Hill

You guessed it – I was second shooting for Ryan Brenizer (September 16, 2012).  Charlene and Vincent were incredibly sweet and they were blessed with perfect autumn weather and a cadre of amazing friends and family.  To boot, they even had the insanely talented Amanda Brown (one of the finalists on “The Voice”) as one of the singers in the live band (Bud Maltin Metropolitan Music).

Ricky’s World

Ok, a little break from wedding photography, here is one of my favorite environmental portraits I shot last year for my neighborhood mechanic who happens to live across the street from me.  The lighting setup here is quite simple.  I prepared this shot using two bare strobes which are directed towards the background to illuminate the environment details (car engines, engine parts, hoses, etc) and a soft-boxed key light, placed on a boom stand, to create a dramatic light on the subject’s face (notice the “Rembrandt triangle” on Ricky’s cheek).  Ricky is a fantastic guy and perhaps the most honest mechanic I’ve met, but he was tired after a long back-breaking day.  So the onus was on us to do this shot as quickly as possible and get the shot I wanted.  We were done in under ten minutes.

Christine and Jesse at The Venetian – Louboutins make The Man

Yes, another second shooting assignment with Ryan Brenizer in the month of October – this time at The Venetian in New Jersey.  I have to say this was absolutely one of the most dazzling and flamboyant couples I’ve met.  As a second shooter, shooting the groom “getting ready” is quite straight forward – the groom is usually absorbed in the drudgery of putting on his tux, indulging in a few beers, checking sports scores, scarfing down a sandwich all while getting roasted by his buddies.  In most cases, we as photographers, try to be as stealthy as possible and not upset this male-bonding dynamic. Arguably there are fewer artistic shot opportunities compared to the bride “getting ready”.  Enter Jesse who had totally turned this notion upside down for me.  With his red soled Christian Louboutins (a brand normally associated with the bride and not the groom), bespoke suit, and bejeweled Breitling watch, he made for the most engaging groom “getting ready” shoot yet.  I immediately sensed that Jesse had a special bond with his friends who really did a fantastic job helping him out and just having an awesome time.  I really enjoyed in helping document Jesse and Christine’ special day as well as their friends, a fantastic and “happy-go-lucky” group of people who had some crazy moves on the dance floor.
