Coney Island is perhaps one of the most enchanting but one of the most challenging spots to shoot engagement portraits – especially on a summer weekend. But the crowds and pandemonium didn’t deter us from getting some truly amazing shots. What makes engagement shoots in Coney Island special is that they feel more like an evening out rather than a photo shoot – this was certainly the case with Brittainy and Lawrence. The couple, who both grew up in New York City, will be getting married later this week and I’m absolutely thrilled to document their wedding.

What an absolute joy shooting Jessica and Kevin’s wedding up in Bear Mountain! Bear Mountain Inn is a wonderful place to have a wedding – especially if you rent the Carousel room. Lighting is certainly a challenge though because the ceilings are high and dark – thus using bounce flash was certainly a “no go.” We managed to overcome this hurdle with a few tricks up our sleeve and come up with some dramatic images.
As it happened…
Coney Island is a true NYC landmark but an engagement portrait session at the historic amusement park during one of the busiest weekends can be quite a challenge. A great assistant, remote lighting, a little patience (especially with the would-be photo-bombers), and most importantly having fun, are key!
Both Florencia and Jae were born in Brazil and will be getting married in São Paulo this November. Unfortunately, they will be moving to the West Coast in the next few weeks and they will be sorely missed by their friends (including myself) here in New York City. My goal was to provide them with some lasting memories of their relatively short time here in the Big Apple. Although it was a bit chilly, which is typical in March, we all had a blast hitting some notable spots such as the High Line, Chelsea, Times Square, Grand Central Station, and yes, 5 Pointz in Long Island City. Many thanks to my good friend Andre Lambertson who came by not only to help but also to provide some wonderful energy and humor (did I mention that Andre is a world renown photojournalist, film maker, and educator?).

Hurricane Schmurricane!
Another second shooter’s perspective with lead photographer Ryan Brenizer. Every wedding that I’ve shot with Ryan has had some level of drama (mostly created by Ryan himself with his crazy lighting techniques); but a looming hurricane? Dana and Ben’s wedding happened to be on the day “Super Storm” Sandy was supposed to hit the Tri-State area (but it turned out that the brunt of Sandy’s impact occurred on the evening of the day after). Even the threat of bridge and road closures didn’t deter guests (and vendors) from making the trip to show their unrelenting support for this beautiful young couple.
Congratulations!
